Like so many others who grew up in southern California, I was raised in a house with a pool in the backyard. The pool was the source of much mystery and danger - I nearly drowned in it at the age of 4 and my parents regarded it with a bit of dread after that. But the pool also made my brother and I popular at school, and its brilliant cerulean glow at night always invited and threatened me in equal measure.
