Hali Linn

Hi! I'm Hali (rhymes with Sally) (she/they) based in Brooklyn, NY. I am an oil painter and installation artist but what you see on my profile today are very special pieces, not typical of my large-scale and installation work. These pieces are smaller, more intimate, and a bit more experimental for me. In these works, I explore how pop-culture imagery encourages intergenerational adoptions of hetero-sexiness, and limits self-identity within a binary obsessed culture. The work shows ruined and objectified bodies that remember, recall, and carry on complex traditions of representation, trauma, and confusion. A little about my background, I went to Oklahoma State University to play soccer, as well as to play the viola for the OSU Symphony. (I still play both!) I found that I was skirting those responsibilities however, to take all art classes and received a BFA in 2010. Then promptly moved to New York, then promptly left to get an MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014.
