Born 1985
Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York
My paintings are visceral, textural topographies stitched from recycled paper bags, onto which I paint. The process of assembling these canvases is a dance, a bridge across the many mediums within which I work. My work aims to expose and promote the culturally-marginalized intelligence of our emotional and intuitive selves. It is fueled by knowing how much more there is to existence than we generally can sustain conscious engagement with, as well as my desire for an expansive conversation around lineage that considers human bloodlines and the soul’s journey. I am currently working with a concept coined by adrienne maree brown,“collaborative ideation,” which asks, “How do we disrupt the constant individualism of creation?” As an artist I am accountable to a larger movement, and am investigating what this disruption looks like inside my practice. Working to activate our deep connectedness and illuminate the thinness of perceived divisions between us, inside both material and immaterial realms, I ask: how can we experience an immaterial reality amidst the traumas of material worlds? Lily Gold is a White, queer, fourth generation New Yorker, and for now is still living in Brooklyn. She is a choreographer, performer and visual artist, working in modes of movement, sound, painting, sculpture, and installation. Her work has been presented by Danspace Project, First Street Gallery, MoMA/Judson Memorial Church, and Movement Research, among others. Gold holds a BA in dance and photography from Hampshire College. Learn more at lilysgold.com.
