My paintings occupy a space between the figurative and the abstract, where human and animal forms disappear and re-emerge in dystopian, romantic landscapes. Drawing on the visceral power of mid-century New York School abstraction as well the heightened emotions of the Baroque, I borrow from those heritages while creating layers of gestural lines and broad restless strokes of color that evoke numerous psychological states. Having grown up in the coastal towns of Florida where massive birds flew out of dark swamps and alligators moved through land and water with dominion, my expressionism is layered with the brutality and grace of those early memories of a formidable nature.
