Burl is named for the circular budding patterns that form inside a tree burl. A burl is an arrested collection of the tree’s plans for growth, a bundle of potential branches. This idea of rippling potential undergirds this painting. In these paintings, I draw only a few lines, and then repeat those rhythmically across the space to create the feeling of a resonant field of sensation, both minimal and full at the same time.
