I always pass this corner on my way to my current studio, most often not noticing much except whether the traffic signal tells me that it is safe to cross 4th Avenue, a broad, median-divided street with cars often speeding as if on a raceway. One sunny morning a couple of months ago I happened to be looking, really seeing my surroundings, and suddenly was struck by the harmony of colors, different shapes and patterns formed by the buildings - generally calm and rhythmic along the roofline, but chaotic and accentuated by saturated colors at street level. It could be just about any time in the last century, except for the pedestrian glued to their cell phone waiting at the intersection, and possibly the new-ish modern building hulking along Union Street.
