I construct visual representations of an artificial land, studies of an invented place. These works started as an investigation of my memories but evolved into a contemplation of the future. Evolving from a partial reconstruction of some of my earliest memories traveling through the American Southwest as a child, this work has become an exploration of the implications of an anthropogenic ecosphere through the construction and study of an amalgamated world. My paintings depict uninhabited portrayals of a constructed landscape. My process includes building small moquettes that utilize a blend of man-made materials (aluminum foil, cellophane, acrylic paint, glass, glue, other found rubbish) with geological materials (sand, granite, coal). I light these constructed forms for a particular time of day with colored gels then photograph them. The digital images serve as painting references. By re-examining these early memories of desolate – yet, curated – landscapes, these works unearth feelings of loss and inevitable change.
